Ingredients
- 8 ounces dried apples or dried peaches
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon or apple pie spice
- 1 can jumbo refrigerated flaky biscuits
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Optional Fresh Fruit Filling Alternative:
- 4 fresh apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Fruit Filling
Using Dried Fruit:
- Combine dried apples (or peaches) and water in a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat, and simmer for about 30 minutes or until tender.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Mash the mixture if the pieces are large.
- Stir in sugar and butter; set aside.
Using Fresh Apples (Optional):
- Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for about 15 minutes or until soft.
- Mash slightly and let cool before using.
Step 2: Prepare the Biscuit Dough
- On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit into a 5-inch circle.
- Place 1 tablespoon of the prepared fruit filling on half of each biscuit circle.
- Moisten the edges of the biscuit with water using your fingers. Fold the biscuit over the filling to form a half-moon shape.
- Press the edges together firmly with a fork dipped in flour to seal.
Step 3: Fry the Pies
- Heat vegetable oil in a heavy skillet or deep fryer to 370°F. The oil should be about 1/2 inch deep.
- Carefully place the pies in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, turning once (about 2–3 minutes per side).
- Ensure the biscuits are cooked through by frying at a steady temperature.
Step 4: Drain and Serve
- Remove the fried pies and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
- Ensure the edges are well-sealed to prevent leaks.
- Fry at a moderate pace to avoid undercooking the biscuit dough.
- For extra sweetness, dust the fried pies with powdered sugar or drizzle with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk.
Enjoy the most delicious, golden-fried apple or peach pies that will have everyone coming back for seconds!
