FRIED APPLE or PEACH PIES

These delightful hand pies are a nostalgic treat with a flaky crust and sweet fruit filling. Perfect for a snack, dessert, or indulgent breakfast!

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces dried apples or dried peaches
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or apple pie spice
  • 1 can jumbo refrigerated flaky biscuits
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Optional Fresh Fruit Filling Alternative:

  • 4 fresh apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Fruit Filling

Using Dried Fruit:

  1. Combine dried apples (or peaches) and water in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat, and simmer for about 30 minutes or until tender.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Mash the mixture if the pieces are large.
  4. Stir in sugar and butter; set aside.

Using Fresh Apples (Optional):

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for about 15 minutes or until soft.
  3. Mash slightly and let cool before using.

Step 2: Prepare the Biscuit Dough

  1. On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit into a 5-inch circle.
  2. Place 1 tablespoon of the prepared fruit filling on half of each biscuit circle.
  3. Moisten the edges of the biscuit with water using your fingers. Fold the biscuit over the filling to form a half-moon shape.
  4. Press the edges together firmly with a fork dipped in flour to seal.

Step 3: Fry the Pies

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a heavy skillet or deep fryer to 370°F. The oil should be about 1/2 inch deep.
  2. Carefully place the pies in the hot oil and fry until golden brown, turning once (about 2–3 minutes per side).
  3. Ensure the biscuits are cooked through by frying at a steady temperature.

Step 4: Drain and Serve

  1. Remove the fried pies and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  2. Serve warm and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

  • Ensure the edges are well-sealed to prevent leaks.
  • Fry at a moderate pace to avoid undercooking the biscuit dough.
  • For extra sweetness, dust the fried pies with powdered sugar or drizzle with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk.

Enjoy the most delicious, golden-fried apple or peach pies that will have everyone coming back for seconds!
