Southern Tea Cake Cookies

These soft, buttery tea cake cookies are a Southern classic, perfect for savoring with a cup of tea or coffee. Delicately flavored with nutmeg, vanilla, and just a touch of sweetness, they’re an easy treat to enjoy anytime.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • (Optional) A dash of nutmeg for a hint of warmth

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.

Step 2: Cream the Butter and Sugar
In a mixer bowl, beat the butter and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 4-5 minutes. This will give the cookies a tender texture.

Step 3: Add the Egg and Vanilla
Reduce the mixer speed to medium. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.

Step 4: Combine with Dry Ingredients
Turn the mixer to low speed and gradually add the flour mixture in three parts, mixing after each addition until just combined. Don’t overmix!

Step 5: Chill the Dough
Place the dough in a Ziploc bag or wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour to firm up.

Step 6: Shape and Bake
Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Using a tablespoon, scoop out portions of dough, roll into balls, and place them on the sheet, leaving 1 ½ inches between each. Gently press each dough ball with your thumb to slightly flatten.

Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are just golden. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the sheet for 5-10 minutes.

Notes

  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Using room temperature butter and egg helps to create a smooth, well-mixed dough.
  • Storage Tips: Store tea cakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze them in a tightly wrapped container; they’ll keep well for up to three months.

Enjoy these traditional Southern treats with a warm drink or as a sweet snack throughout the day!
